Misty Salon hosted a high-profile event on International Women’s Day, focusing on accelerating action towards women’s economic empowerment and gender equity in Nigeria. The event convened leaders from the creative sector, corporate world, and diplomatic community to share insights and strategies for fostering a more equitable society. FYD (Foundation for Youth Development) attended the event, underscoring its commitment to supporting the development of young women.
Participants emphasised that gender equity is not optional but a critical factor for Nigeria to reach its full potential. With statistics highlighting the nearly equal gender distribution in Nigeria, the event underscored that disenfranchising women weakens the country. A significant focus was placed on raising confident girls, challenging traditional gender roles, and providing quality education. These points resonated strongly with FYD, whose core mission involves creating supportive environments where young women are encouraged to pursue their ambitions and develop self-esteem. The discussions on parental support and challenging societal norms align with FYD’s efforts to promote safe and equitable spaces for young women to thrive.
The event also explored strategies for supporting women in business and leadership roles, and highlighted the importance of financial stability for women, particularly in light of the disproportionate impact of events like COVID-19. These discussions are particularly relevant to FYD, which seeks to equip young women with the tools and resources necessary for economic empowerment and leadership. The event addressed the need to dismantle societal barriers and challenge traditional norms that hinder women’s progress. Participants shared personal experiences and strategies for overcoming these challenges, emphasising the importance of women supporting each other. Speakers cautioned against women taking on excessive burdens and making excuses for others, encouraging them to prioritise their well-being and hold others accountable. The concept of being “self-full” rather than selfish was introduced, highlighting the importance of self-care for effective empowerment.
Mrs. Gill Lever, Deputy High Commissioner, UK High Commission, the host, was recognised for her steadfast commitment to advancing gender balance and for her support towards C3 Media plays, including Chronicles of Runsewa, Nke Naija, Misty’s Salon, The Perfect One, and other productions. The event also featured Ms. Makeda Solomon, a retired risk management executive and international award-winning actress, who shared her insights on personal transformation and empowering women. Mrs. Victoria Enang Nwuche, the gifted writer and producer of C3 Media, was also recognised for her dedication to nurturing talents within the theatre space, and for her pioneering role in bringing theatrical productions to Abuja.
The event concluded with a call to action for participants to implement the discussed strategies within their spheres of influence. Key recommendations included intentional support for female-owned businesses, active mentorship and encouragement for young girls, raising awareness about gender-based violence and advocating for stronger enforcement of laws, and promoting self-care and personal well-being among women. FYD is committed to integrating these recommendations into its programmes, with a particular focus on mentorship and empowerment initiatives designed for young women.
Misty Salon’s event served as a catalyst for accelerating action on women’s empowerment in Nigeria. By fostering dialogue, sharing insights, and inspiring collective action, the event contributed to the ongoing effort to create a more equitable and prosperous society for all. FYD’s attendance and active participation reaffirm its dedication to supporting initiatives that uplift and empower young women, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential.
