The NAF Conference Centre was abuzz with excitement as audiences gathered to witness “The Chronicles of Runsewa,” a remarkable production by C3 Media scripted by the talented writer Victoria Nwuche. The play left the audience enthralled and delved into local narratives, blending storytelling and entertainment in a way that resonates profoundly.
Supported by the Foundation for Youth Development (FYD), the story follows two compassionate women from FYD who visit a correctional center. Their mission is to listen to the stories of inmates to determine if they are eligible for assistance with their legal cases. Approved by the forward-thinking prison warden, who seeks to introduce programs beneficial to the inmates, their visit becomes the catalyst for a series of deep revelations.
Through the inmates’ narratives, the play sheds light on pressing issues within Nigeria’s society and the Nigerian justice system, including wrongful accusations, systemic failures, and the personal struggles faced due to societal and familial circumstances. Each story is a poignant reflection of the complexities surrounding justice and rehabilitation, prompting the audience to ponder the fairness and effectiveness of the legal processes.
The warden, on the verge of retirement, is depicted as a man striving to leave a positive legacy. His character adds depth to the storyline, highlighting the internal conflicts faced by those within the system who wish to enact change. However, the plot takes a dramatic turn when he is coerced into compromising his moral values due to external pressures, underscoring themes of corruption and ethical dilemmas.
The production is further enriched by vibrant musical interludes, including a powerful rendition of “Stop Calling Me a Prisoner,” and lively Nigerian songs accompanied by dance sequences. These elements not only entertain but also amplify the emotional impact of the play, connecting the audience to the cultural roots of the narrative.
The evening was graced by the presence of Mrs. Gill Lever, Deputy High Commissioner, UK High Commission, who delivered an insightful speech commending C3 Media and Victoria Nwuche for their ability to craft stories that highlight critical societal issues in Nigeria. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of considering the fair treatment of prisoners and scrutinizing the justice system, praising the play for bringing these topics to the forefront.
A representative from Foundation for Youth Development (FYD), Mr. Wasiu Akindele, also addressed the audience reaffirming the organization’s commitment to supporting youth development and advocating for justice reform. The collaborative efforts depicted in the play underscore the power of community and organizations working together towards positive change.
Overall, “The Chronicles of Runsewa” proved to be more than just a theatrical performance. The fusion of compelling storytelling, cultural expression, and critical social commentary left spectators both entertained and inspired. The production succeeded in sparking meaningful conversations about justice, compassion, and the importance of addressing systemic issues within society.
The audience departed the NAF Conference Centre moved by the performance, carrying with them a deeper understanding of the challenges within the Nigerian justice system and the transformative power of storytelling. “The Chronicles of Runsewa” stands as a testament to the impact of theatre in reflecting and influencing the world we live in, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.
